TENORM Program Management

8 Hour Course

Applied Health Physics instructors shall present an 8-Hour Training Course with focus on managing a Radiation Safety Program involving Technically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials. The course is designed for the individual(s) who have minimal radiation safety training or experience, but with responsibility for overseeing the safe uses of equipment that has the potential for becoming contaminated with Radium-226 and associated NORM isotopes.

The course content includes but is not limited to:

  • Radiation Fundamentals
  • Background Radiation
  • Occupational Limits/Biological Effects
  • TENORM Overview
  • Regulatory Requirements and Guidance
  • PPE and Proper Hygiene
  • TENORM Program Management
  • Evaluation and Control of TENORM Hazards
  • Practical Exercise

The lesson plan includes hands-on uses of radiation and contamination survey equipment in the class room as well as an exercise that includes the use of actual radioactive devices and mock-up contamination situations. Upon successful completion of the exam, attendees shall receive a certificate of completion.

Please contact Ellen Teprag for more details.

4 Hour Course

This 4-hour course is designed to provide specific instruction and guidance to individuals who have minimal training and/or experience but new found responsibility to maintain industrial equipment that is involved in the handling, processing or transfer of solids or liquids that are exposed to the Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) or Technically Enhanced NORM (TENORM) associated with the oil and gas industry.

The course includes not only the classroom instruction for basic radiation fundamentals but hands-on training on the proper use of PPE and radiation detection instrumentation. Each participant will receive detailed guidance on taking field measurements of both radiation and contamination, donning and doffing of PPE and emphasis on proper hygiene practices.

Upon successful completion of the course each participant shall receive a certificate of completion.
